Choosing your font for its environmental benefit
There are thousands of fonts out there and you may have your favorites, we all do, however have you ever considered the environmental impact of your font choice?
It's quite simple when you think about it, big thick fonts such as Arial Black obviously use more ink than its slimmer cousin Arial Narrow. However now people have gone a step further, there is a new trend for environmentally friendly printing which specificially chooses fonts that use less ink or fit more characters and therefore more text on each page.
One example is GreenPrint's Evergreen font which focuses on saving paper by using thinner characters with less space in between them so you can fit more words on each page. GreenPrint claim that use of this font over for example Arial or Times New Roman could reduce your paper usage by 15-20%. Evergreen is available for download for just $10.
Another example is Ecofont which is available for download for free and places lots of tiny white dots within the character, this produces readable text that uses less ink than a standard font. Therefore we would never suggest you use this font for external use because the result is a little bit fuzzy. However for internal or personal use for printing text in 9-12 point type, it's a good option that could save up to 20% on ink.
Of course, we recommend that you do not press the print button unless you really have to. A document management system eliminates the need for lots of printing and photocopying within your organization as well as cutting manual data entry by up to 90% but if you do choose to print, please consider which font you use for more than just it's looks.
